Movable bridges are relatively rare because they are more expensive to operate and maintain than stationary bridges. They also impede traffic�on the water when they are closed and on the roadway or rail line when they are open. Of the 770 bridges for which the New York City Transportation Department is responsible, 25 are movable bridges, including at least one of each of the four types defined above.
