Description
We all have lived through the construction of the New Memorial Bridge and now it is close to being open, which will render a loud cheer from both sides of the Pascataqua River. Amen to a job well done!
The Memorial Bridge was a through truss lift bridge that for 88 years (1923-2011) carried U.S. 1 across the Piscataqua River between Portsmouth, New Hampshire and Badger's Island in Kittery, Maine, USA. The bridge was closed permanently to vehicle traffic on July 27, 2011, with a replacement to be built by July 2013. The bridge closed to pedestrians and cyclists on January 9, 2012.] Removal of the main lift span of the bridge was completed on February 8, 2012.
The lift span could be fully opened to allow large commercial vessels to pass. During summer, the lift section was partially elevated every half-hour between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. for smaller commercial and recreational boat traffic. The bridge was the only one of the three Portsmouth Harbor bridges with provisions for pedestrians and bicycles. New Hampshire and Maine designated the bridge as part of their State Bicycle Routes, and the bridge was part of the proposed East Coast Greenway.

Lovely moment in the fog ... with a vintage feel through the sepia tones .... nostalgia for all who have survived construction and replacement of a necessary bridge. L/f
