Ice that forms in colder overnight temperatures. It is most common in the spring when most days are above freezing. The harder surface created by overnight ice on the top of a well thawed ice sheet is the source of considerable over-confidence. This leads to a lot of swims and fair number of fatalities, particularly among fishermen.
