Description
At the mouth of the Piscataqua River in Kittery Maine a graying old structure is slowly crumbling on a small island. The Wood Island Life Saving Station has stood watch for more than 100 years. The Town of Kittery owns Wood Island and its Station, and had been preparing to demolish it at a cost of $250,000 of town money. A 501 c 3 non-profit group of local citizens formed to oppose the Towns plan in 2011 and offered to pay to restore the Station themselves. We are called the Wood Island Life Saving Station Association or WILSSA. After four years of effort, Kittery and WILLSA came to an agreement to prevent demolition and allow the restoration.
